The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency has arrested two suspects in possession of hard drugs, valued at N50m at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano State.
Parading the suspects at the airport on Thursday, the NDLEA commandant at the airport, Mr. Ambrose Umoru, said the suspects – a man and a woman – were nabbed on February 17 by the operatives of the command during a routine inward screening of passengers on board Ethiopian Airline, flight number ET 941, with the substances suspected to be narcotic drugs.
According to Umoru, one of the suspects, Nweke Emmanuel, 49, a native of Ire in the Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, was caught with 2.180kg of ingested heroin, adding that the quantity is the single largest drug ingestion seizure recorded in the country in recent times.
Umoru said, “Emmanuel was a businessman and barber, who is based in Kinshasha, Democratic Republic of Congo. The suspect travelled to Bujumbura, Burundi, where he ingested a total of 127 wraps of heroin.
“Emmanuel transited Addis Ababa to Kano and was to board a night luxury bus to Onitsha, where he was expected to excrete the substance when the operatives of the NDLEA Airport Command, Kano, promptly arrested him on arrival.
“The second suspect, Gloria Dumebi, 32, from Ibusa in the Oshimili Local Government area of Delta State, who is a hair stylist, was arrested on the same flight, with 3Kg whitish powdery substance, suspected to be cocaine. The woman concealed the packaged substance in a large brown traveling bag in order to convey it to Nigeria before she was arrested by the operatives.”
Following the arrest, Umoru advised youths in the country to avoid dealing in hard drugs.
