Human trafficking: Saraki, Obaseki, EU, others move to tackle scourge

Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, yesterday harped on the need for Nigerians to look inwards in the task of getting the youths and citizens out of the worrisome problem of human trafficking, illegal migration and modern day slavery to bring back the nation’s dignity.
He assured the people that the federal government would adopt carrot and stick approach to curb the menace of irregular migration and human trafficking in the country. The Senate President said urgent steps and improved collaboration between the country, African countries and other nations were needed to tackle the ugly menace that had cost the death of thousands of unaccounted lives of majority of the victims who face excruciating conditions, abuse of their human rights and other inhuman treatments.
Delivering a keynote address at the opening ceremony of the two-day Senate Roundtable on Migration and Human Trafficking in Benin, Saraki said big changes begin with seemingly little ones. He stressed that the situation at the moment does not call for blame game, but the “the idea is to collaborate in a responsible manner, to make sure that agencies in Africa, Europe and the wider world are not failing in their duty on this issue.
“Let me make it abundantly clear that Nigeria is willing to collaborate with all countries of the world on irregular migration. With our international partners, we should be able to work out a carrot-and-stick approach that gives our people the incentive to stay on the continent and strive.
Every human being deserves his or her own place in the sun – and for many, that place in the sun is here, in Africa, but they have to stay in order to find it,” he said. The Senate President lamented that Nigeria was ranked 23 on the Global Slavery Index of 167 countries and that there was needed to put a stop to it.
