Herdsmen: Stakeholders debunk closing of 30 primary schools in Ogun

Stakeholders in Yewa North, Ogun State have described a report that 30 primary schools were shut down in the area following Fulani herdsmen’s attack as not only mischievous, but a calculated attempt by some people to malign the name of the local government.
According to the stakeholders, the figure was exaggerated as only one primary school- Community Primary School, Igbonla was closed down as a result of fears of herdsmen’s attack.

The stakeholders, comprising the traditional rulers, representatives of primary schools and official of Ketu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Yewa North, Ogun State, insisted that it was far from the truth that 30 schools were shut down due to fear of the attack by the Fulani herdsmen.

Speaking on behalf of the stakeholders, the Ketu LCDA chairman, Moses Adegbite said the report that 30 schools were shut down because of herdsmen’s attack was mischievous and a calculated attempt of faceless groups and individuals to malign the name of the council by portraying it as insensitive to residents’ plight.

However, the council chairman lamented frequent attack by the herdsmen as farmers were either killed or maimed when they tried to stop or challenge the herdsmen from destroying their farmland. He said: “One aspect of it all is when farmers tried to stop or challenge the herdsmen from destroying their produce, such farmers are either killed or maimed for life if he or she is lucky.”
