Gunmen attack psychiatric hospital, shoot policeman

Four armed men on Sunday evening stormed the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital in Calabar, Cross River State and stole phones and laptops.

The Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Joseph Okegbe, said four young men in a tricycle otherwise called Keke went to the area where the fuel dump is located at the hospital and robbed those who came to buy petrol of their phones and other valuables, valued at hundreds of thousands of naira. Okegbe said a policeman, who was in mufti was shot in the leg but men from the Atakpa Police Station were called in and they took care of their colleague.

But, according to him, the gunmen had disappeared before the police arrived. He said: “About 5.20p.m. yesterday (Sunday), I got information that some people invaded my hospital. I rushed there and was told that four young men came in with Keke. They went to the fuel dump within the premises and robbed people, mostly customers who came to buy petrol, of phones.

They shot a policeman who was in mufti and who came to buy petrol. “The police at Atakpa were called and by the time they came, the boys had disappeared. So they took care of their colleague who was shot.

Only one person was shot in the leg and that was the policeman. So what came to my mind is probably, this is a spillage from the cult war that started at the weekend. But from the look of things, they didn’t come primarily to rob members of staff or patients.”

Okegbe, however, complained that since the Federal Government outsourced security matters, nothing had been paid to the contractors, thus endangering the lives of both workers and patients in the hospital.

He added: “We are exposed to danger because since the Federal Government outsourced security to contractors in 2015, they have not been paid.

The situation is so bad that patients are at risk here in this hospital.” The medical director appealed to the Federal Government to come to the aid of the hospital by paying contractors so that they could resume work and help secure the hospital, workers and patients. He pointed out that until that was done, the hospital would be susceptible to attacks.
