A father, Mr. Stephen Nnadiogo, at the weekend stabbed to death his four children, sister-in-law before taking his own life. The incident occurred at No. 21b, Ntueke Street, Awada Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The children were aged two, six, eight and 10 years old. It was learnt that there has been a running battle in Nnadiogo’s home over his wife’s alleged infidelity and the paternity of the four children. Nnadiogo’s wife, Chika, who owns of a patent store, it was learnt, had always used the issue to abuse her husband each time they quarrelled.
A neighbour, who pleaded anonymity, said that each time the couple quarrelled, the woman would tell Nnadiogo that he was claiming to be a man while he could not impregnate her and that he was not the biological father of their four children. In response, Nnadiogo would call her a whore who could not stay with one man. However, the man struck at the weekend when the woman went to her medicine store and left their four children with her husband and sister. In an apparent bid to carry out the evil plan, Nnadiogo sent the housemaid on an errand and then picked up a knife and started stabbing the children as well as his sisterin- law until they died.
Satisfied that they were dead, Nnadiogo went and hid himself in one of the rooms in the flat of a four-storey building where they lived and took his own life by reportedly drinking poison. But when the maid returned, she found the four children and the sister-in-law in a pool of blood.
Petrified, she screamed and ran out to tell her madam at the medicine store that her children had been murdered. Chika ran to the police station to file a report. When contacted yesterday, the Awada Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr. Martin Mbajunwa, confirmed the incident.
The DPO said their bodies had been deposited in the morgue. He added that investigation into matter was ongoing. However, it was learnt that Nnadiogo, who returned from overseas a few years ago to settle in Nigeria, had been having a mental challenge. The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Nkiru Nwode, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview.
She said Nnadiogo just returned from Arochukwu in Imo State where he went to for treatment for mental illness. Nwode said that some unidentified substances were discovered where his body was found but autopsy was needed to ascertain the cause of death. She said: “The incident happened.
The man had mental issues and he just returned from Arochukwu where he went for treatment a few days ago before he committed the crime. “Some unidentified substances were found around where his body was found but we cannot ascertain the cause of his death until autopsy is concluded.”
