Enugu is up-to-date in workers’ salaries – NLC

The Enugu State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has debunked newspapers’ report that only Lagos state government in the country was “healthy” in the payment of workers’ salaries, saying that “Enugu state government does not owe any salary to date.”
In a statement by its Chairman and Secretary, Comrades Virginus Nwobodo and Edema Edward Olorunwa, the union took exception to the said report, regretting that the author did not carry out “a thorough and holistic research before issuing the statement.”
It stressed that “apart from making sure that salaries are paid not later than 25th day of every month, Enugu state government also ensured that the 13th month salary was paid to all the workers last year as Christmas bonus.”
It went on: “It is also imperative to inform the public that the backlog of salaries owed local government’s staff by successive governments in Enugu state had been cleared by Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on assumption of office.
“We will be available to prove our case beyond any reasonable doubt should the need arise as Enugu state is quite healthy as Gburugburu is working and this is possible because Enugu state is in the hands of God.”
Meanwhile, Ugwuamyi had reiterated his commitment to make the state an investment hub as he inaugurated Ease of Doing Business Council (EDBC). The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo, said “at my inaugural speech on May 29, 2015, I promised that I will make government resources and services available to create equal opportunities for every willing citizen to make a living, create wealth, send our children to school and enjoy life in a safe and secure environment.
This social contract remains the guiding light of this administration.” Ugwuanyi went on: “In Nigeria today, government at all levels as well as public and private institutions that are responsible for the creation of our national wealth and facilitation of essential services, agree that our economy requires a major overhaul and improvement. “According to several industry reports, Nigeria has technically come out of recession, but our global ranking on the ease of doing business remains abysmally low. This low national ranking, no doubt, adversely affects our productivity and competitiveness at all levels.
